Sunday Scribblings: Winter "Wonderland"

Winter: It is definitely one of those seasons that we dread the arrival of, but once it's gone, we miss it in a way that we never thought we would. As kids, we wanted to have Christmas in July, and many years we did; because it seemed that most department stores had blow out savings in July. We wanted our candy advent calendars in September and candy canes all year round.

While Winter does bring unusually cold weather, snow, ice (all dependent on where you live, of course) higher electric and gas bills, "lost" minutes in the car in the morning waiting for your car to warm up enough to drive.....We also have to remember the good things that winter can bring us. Some of my favorites being: hot chocolate, an excuse to put logs on the fire, nights reading by the window as snow falls. I can't forget Christmas, and presents, and FAMILY....Christmas music (humming your favorite Christmas tune at work, at the gym, and even in the shower), and shopping (not just for myself, but for others too!)

Winter allows me to put away the flips flops, Bermuda shorts, and Polo's... and break out my scarves, and sweaters, and jackets. For all of us "fashionista's" out there, winter clothes are just so much better than summer clothes.

There is usually a lot to look forward to in the winter. And, that usually means a lot of pressure on people too. Some of us have last minute work related projects that must get finished before the new year begins. For me, that being putting on a Christmas Concert with eighty-four six year olds. Some of us will wait until December 23rd to begin shopping for family and friends. Some of us have taken on the task of hosting Christmas dinners, holiday work parties, and “ugly" Christmas sweater gatherings with friends from college!

Most of us take on a lot of financial burden during the winter too. We want to escape from the cold and vacation in Hawaii... or Thailand... or in my case Malaysia. We want to buy the newest gadgets not only for our self, but our family too. We want to order pizza, and Chinese take out-- more so than ever, so that we don't have to drive in the cold to the grocery store.

Winter, like I said before, is one of those seasons that creep up on us. We don't want to open the doors and feel the cold air. We don't want to put on those layers before going outside. We definitely don't want to drive during the snow storms, or risk the black ice... But come spring, we're happy that we did. We lived through another winter, and we're always looking forward to the next one. The "cold" air did us all some good. We realized what we were thankful for, we shared with others, and we made memories that will last a life time.

I guess winter isn't as bad as we make it seem, ah? What do you think?

Like you say, it depends on where we live! We've already had one snow storm and another is expected on Monday so I'm sick of it!

A well-written piece!

I enjoyed reading your post. I'm one of those who would love to spend the winter in a warmer climate, unfortunately my job is smack dab in the middle of winterland. Guess I'll make do.
